Antiques

I got a visit from Aunt Marie last week. Marie is my husband’s aunt and one of the most interesting people I know. She stopped by as a way to escape her cleaning lady. She has nothing against her cleaning lady, but it is weird to sit around and watch someone else clean your house.

She spent most of her visit reading the boys stories, but she also brought me a very cool gift. She is in the process of cleaning out her closet and has been giving me items here and there (fabric, light box, art books, etc). Well, this visit included a very old cardboard box that she says has been in storage for years.

Call me silly, but the box itself was kinda cool. It is a very sturdy old school cardboard box. They don’t make boxes like this any more. Anyway, I am getting off topic. I opened the box to discover a very old and very beautiful quilt.

It is a double wedding ring quilt that was pieced and quilted by hand. It was a gift to her father (my husband’s grandfather) from a family friend.. It was made sometime in the 1930’s, possibly as early as 1927 (she was not sure). It is stained a little and torn in a few spots and very well loved!

I am going to try to repair the torn parts and then find a way to display it in my house. Marie included some fabrics she had picked out to start a repair.  I do need some advice on cleaning. I had thought Oxiclean might get rid of some of the stains. Please comment if you have any suggestions.

I will leave you with a picture of another antique.

Prissy just turned 13 and her favorite pastime is laying belly up in the sun.
